HEY JOSE,
ALL THE GUYS ARE right on here of course. For me it was about making some extra money at the time 30+ years ago when I started tying my own stuff.

Now it's about the satisfaction of making something that works and is a saleable item at the same time. Sir Jim is right it's PRICELESS to catch em something you made, even better if it's something you invented that no one else has tried before.

I can remember watching several fellas on here progress over the last year and make dynomite stuff now. Most are fellas just like you trying to do something on their own. Dick Tabbert, Richard King, Carl Hendrix, and many others have now established themselves as above average tiers . There are lots of Masters in my opinion on here like , Jen Nayfly, Greg Hopper Mc williams, Sir Jim Gronaw , Shooter, Mark sleepy Sleeper, The Great Popper maker MARK STINE, AND THE LIST JUST KEEPS GOING...... I'M NOT even qualified in my own mind to even carry their tying supplies to a Show or Expo !!!!!!!! Not trying to omit any of the great tiers on here cause there are so many I can't remember em all !!!!!!!!
Any of these guys can answer just about any question ya got when it comes to tying and hope you'll ask em cause they are willing to share insight which is why this site is so great to begin with....... Sorry got so long winded......

I repect all these guys opinions and would not hesitate to ask em any questions if you decide to take the plunge . START SIMPLE !!!!!!!!!

   TOOTY

PS

THE FIRST TIME YOU GIVE A BUG TO A KID AND HE CATCHES A FISH ON IT MAKES IT ALL WORTH WHILE . SIR JIM WAS RIGHT "PPPPPPPPPPRICELESS"

Although I don't tye flies, I do tye jigs...mostly, I just get a kick out of catching fish on a lure I made, and I love to see others do the same, both friends and family. We have great tyers and jig makers on this site...some of the best to be found anywhere, and almost all of them catch plenty of fish on their own creations. That is priceless!

it is not about the money although it is ,if you understand what i am saying. i look at it like reloading for my guns. being able to sit down the night before and tie up a few extra flies, that can not be bought any where, that catch fish for me.to me that is priceless, then there is the satisfaction of catching fish on a fly that you tied .

$0.10 fly..man, that's the cost of the hook nowadays. I have plenty of materials around the house to actually make a "$0.00 fly". However, the starter kit for fly tying still put you over that $0.10 fly..hehehehehehe..UNLESS, you're using the work bench vice as a fly vice..ahhhhhh..the olden day. I even use a crimping plier to old down the hook to make a fly once.

It's cheaper to buy for the time being until you get the hang of fly rodding. Once everything is going well, think about tying your own flies. In the mean time, ask everyone here to give you a few samples to try out. If you like their flies, recommend in investing in a few more handfuls as a reserve. It's glorious to use the flies that have been a living testament to empty the waters of gills.
