Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Does anyone have problems with bass swipping gills from under your boat??

Does anyone have problems with bass swipping gills from under your boat?? Was fly fishing this weekend caugt a small gill on a popper. A bass came out from under my boat and engulfed the gill. I came up with a 3 pound bass and no sings of the gill. Anyone else had this type of thing happen to them? This is not the first time for me.

Yeah those bass (Green Carp) are a pain sometimes. I've actually been fighting a good sized Bluegill and had large bass come out of nowhere and grab them! It's happened with a Striper and a big catfish once too! We humans are not the only critters that like Bluegills!
Green Carp, I don't care who you are that's funny right there!
Caught the biggest bass of my life, on a bluegill that I was still trying to catch. Ended up with two fish, and a broken Garcia blue conolon UL rod. steve b
Absolutely!
caught a dink of a gill on a dry fly, he went into a death spasm (drama queen) and a big ole bucket mouth came out of the depths and snatched him. i almost tried to jerk it out of his mouth, but then waited to see if he would eat it and i could bring him in. didnt work. all i ended up with was a lil gill that was scared half to death. to his dismay, i put him back in the water!
I had a big pike hit a 'gill on the way up, snapped the line and lost them both. Darn snakes.
ive fished on docks with my little sister she didnt wanna fish so i gave her a small bluegill to play with so she tied on some line that was there from the previous fisher man and tied it though the gills and threw the bluegill about five feet from the pier and tied it to her shoe and began 2 play some more with the bait then i say this huge turn up by the line and didnt pay it no mind then next thing u know the lines running out i think its the bluegill its a 9 pound bass on a small bluegill jus bigger than a minnow
I have had this happen a lot.Netted a 4 lb largemouth while he was eyeballing a small bluegill that I had hooked, the bass never hit but was really intent on sizing it up and while he was doing that I netted him with the landing net.I swear on my tackle box, this is the truth !!
That’s cool ! I once saw a fairly big bass doing the same thing "sizing up a gill" the bass was reluctant to rise out of the clear depth but I saw her with Polaroid glasses
Hey Joe...when I see big bass swiping at bluegills I'm playing in I simply keep a heavier rod handy and put em out on a 4/0 light Mutu circle hook and see what happens. Over the course of a lifetime, my family and I have taken many 5 to almost 9 pound largemoths this way.

So, in answer to your question, I don't have a problem with it at all!
Jim -I knew you'd have something to say about this discussion! I have to try the gill/bass connection ...by the way caught a 19" bass about an hour and 1/2 ago released her back into Cupsaw lake where I got her .I'm thinking she was so fat 4lbs wouldnt be exagerating.Maybe she was heavier! I'll post a pic soon.
How do you hook the bluegill? I am liking this idea. Always a solution to every problem Ha Ha.
My girlfriends pond has Bass that will chase anything being reeled in from gills to crappies and perch.I caught him/her a few times over the past couple years and just recently too.It measured 21-1/2".I'll post a pic later.
