For a quick ID on channel/blues, the anal fin on an blue cat is 'straight edged' and has 30 or more anal rays. The channel has a more 'rounded' anal fin with 24 to 29 anal rays. Large, adult male channels often are mistaken for a blue because they tend to take on a cobalt blue coloration, especially during the spawn, and develop a swollen head. Although the anal fin is partially covered by the anglers hand, I would venture that it is a fine channel cat, as the anal fin appears to be rounded. I don't know if blues have yet migrated from the James to the Albemarle region yet. I do know they are in the Piankitank system.
Nice fish BTW!
I thought it was a Blue Cat but sometimes it's hard to tell.....this river has both.....
Looks like a 4 or 5 pound channel cat?.....Cool.
Dandy Cat
looks like they had a great time
Good Peeps for sure......we catch bushels of big blue crabs off these piers every year too......Fun times!
