Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Suppose you've been invited to fish a private pond, almost two acres, that you've never seen before.  Suppose you have only one hour to fish it today.  Ice has just gone.  How do you "case it out" or do you just walk up and throw out a fly?

I have a grandson I want to take, and want him to think I know what I'm doing

That's a good one Bob without ever fishing it before and you'll be fishing blind and at the hardest time of the year. I would say were the most weeds are but the the fish will be deeper than that so you'll have to fish past the weeds and try different depths. Another good place to fish is if he feeds his fish find out where and fish that area and still remember there's probably no fish in shallow yet. My ice is all gone it finished melting off today. Come on SPRING.....

I love to fish new ponds...........If the water is clear enough to see any rocks or weeds where the bottom drops-off is a good bet. If the sun has been warming the water, I would make a few throws to see if there are any fish in the warmer shallow water that will warm quicker than deep water........(especially if part of the pond has a black (dark) colored bottom).

The spillway of the dam is another good place...(fish will hover near a spillway and watch for any tasty snacks to float by.)

..........If the water is still cold, use a good wet fly (like the MM Minnow or a woolly-Bugger) and remember to play it >>>>>> s-l-o-w-l-y. /////  Good Luck and let us know how you make out............Don in SC

Thanks, Don.  I'm going to make up some MM Minnows today.  We've had almost two inches of rain in the last days, and that has helped melt the ice and increased water levels.  There is a little creek at the back of my property.  It is flowing strong this morning. Could we be springing?

I surely do enjoy this web site and its helpful contributors like you.
