I find that most 'gills hold in the shade of a dock, 1 - 2' under the surface. I have a lot of luck with slip floats, but you don't need to do this. Just use a sensitive rod, put a 1/8 oz crappie jig on, and bait with a small worm or a section of nightcrawler. Lower it down into the water a foot or two. When you feel the tap-tap of the hit (or see the fish take the worm), set the hook.
I like to put the stop-knot for a slip float rig on my line. Adjust the stop knot so that it's a foot or two above the bait. Don't put on a float. Lower it down into the water until the stop-knot is at the water's surface.
I have alot more success around docks for crappies than gills. Ill put a smaller crappie minnow on under a bobber about 1 to 2 foot down and cast under or as close as I can and hold on for some action.
