When I began fly fishing this year, I only had about one and a half months left of good fishing weather. In that time, Ward Bean's panfish polecat was the best producer for me.
Everybody here has some really great looking flies. Will have to try to copy them. I really like the Panfish Polecat, a yellow Grugler, the CowDung and yellow Wooly Worm.
Over the years, I've used many bluegill specific flies, but lately I find myself using a Montana nymph almost exclusively. The bigger the hook size, the better. I never use dry flies, or poppers for bluegill anymore because it seems like the deeper I go, the fewer small fish I catch. If I don't have any Montana nymphs in my box, I'll usually tie on a Wooly Bugger.
Wow, you guys got some nice stuff going. My BG flies are Adams, usually a size 16 or 18....or 14. I may use a RC if the Adams doesn't start working soon. I'm not exactly a dry-fly snob. It's just that, well, that's all I use.
