Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Does anyone have any experience on these "new" gang rigs?  I know they made quite a splash on the BASS circuit last year and have been outlawed in their Elite series tournaments.  It seems like they might be good, especially for schooling fish, white bass, crappie, etc.  What lures would work best with this rig, especailly for panfish?

Bing I wish I could help you, but I'm afraid I have a hard enough time keeping track of just one lure! Very interesting concept.

I tried to make one with a small pan fish lure. I've only threw it once to see if it would swim OK.

Might try it once the water warms up.

Something slowish and buggy looking, I should think. Remember, most bluegill are not chasers like their predatory cousins, the basses. They are more like lurking ambushers, hovering around structure. And they are known to be both line and rig shy.

Sure, the biggest ones will hit bait fish mimics, which is why micro cranks and spoons catch them. But that strikes me as a unique set of circumstances, one that has to be carefully orchestrated. Big, wire rigs swooping along in front of them seems more frightening than enticing.

All that said, I'd suggest lightweight (1/32, 1/64, etc.) grub tail and twist tail jigs, 1" Gulp minnows or something like that. Rig them on the lightest wire spreaders you can manage and fish them vertically over structure, not cast-and-retrieve fashion. For all of that, you may as well go with drop shot rigs while you're at it.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks David, just what i was looking for.
