Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Okay brothers and Sisters, I need some help. I have long been a devotee of the short, ultralight rods - say 5' maximum length. I'm going to try a longer rod this Spring, nearly 7', ultralight fast action, as I'm going for casting distance with negligible weight.

I'm looking for a reel that will handle at the heaviest, 4lb mono or braid,  and has excellent long distance ability, especially with very little weight. I'm just afraid that a traditional ultralight reel, with its diminutive spool, will not serve me well in this regard.

I've been researching long spool reels, and the newer mag spool reels, both of which tout their respective abilities at long distance casting, but have no experience with either one.

Does anyone use these type of reels, or have any suggestions?

I don't know how old they are but I would suggest keeping then in the spincast outfits. They are so much forgiving for the kids.

i might try the daiwa goldcast then and see how they stand up they need something new cuz they got tje fishing bug like their pops here thank god

Good luck on the kids, keep them fishing. If they are young there attention span is short so if you really want to keep them involved go to somewhere they get lots of bites regardless weather the fish are large or small. You will see in the long run it will be much more enjoyable for them.

imma buy 'em something from the box this time around the boys are 4and 6 and when their stuff don't work they'll say daddy whats this junky thing doimg it won't work so if they can tell the difference in good and junk maybe it's time i step their gear up as well and you won't believe but my youngest son can work a drag pretty good
i'm so happy they love going with me and loved it when my dad took me
and now i take dad

That is truly a nice gesture. Hope my boy's never forget me and let me sit home when they go fishing. You sound like a great dad and great son wish you the best.

Bobby, I tried one of the Omegas in the store and it reeled very smoothly but the drag was garbage - stuttered noticeably when I pulled line from it.  The Goldcast on the other hand had a very smooth, dependable drag - it's the only spincast reel I know of that does.  The difference in the drag was the concluding factor.

I agree with Walt Bobby....I personally don't believe the Omega lives up to the hype...I actually find the gold series a better buy including the gold series microcasts.....The drag is very important when big fish attack ultralight equipment and the gold series has treated me well on more than one occasion.......I've caught big channel cats, bass and bowfin on the Gold series 11 with no problem and actually had a great time doing it! But it's like Ford and Chevys or Mercury and Evinrude....each person has established there preference for various reasons.....Your testimony may prove the Omega to be awesome!

So I was just making a bluegill rod, and I got out my Sahara to see how it fit on the rod, and made the discovery that I had incorrectly stated, in a previous post on this thread, which size Sahara I use with my eight-foot bluegill rod - it's the 2500D, not the 1000D...My bad!
