Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Does anyone know if a copper nose blue gills will tolerate northern climates, Oh and Michigan border. I was wanting to try a dozen or so for the pond to see how they do, but I don't want to spend money on something that will dye. Don't know anything about copper nose bluegills except they do get larger. Any info will be appreciated.

Dick,

Coppernose will not survive the first winter in your neck of the woods.

Perhaps you can find a supplier for our own Dr. Condello's strain of northern  Bluegill?

It's possible that they may survive up here. Doubt very seriously they'd get anywhere near the size/weight they do down South. 10" 'gills up here are nearly twice as old as those in warmer climates
Thanks for the come back. I didn't think that they would but really wasn't positive. I would like some giant gills in my pond. When I had the pond dug it is a 3/4 acre pond. I put in Large mouth Bass, Hybred Blue Gill, and Catfish. I think I put in to many catfish and they eat everything. So I don't have a lot of gills but the catfish are huge and I have quit a few Bass but nothing big. So there were some mistakes made and the grand kids don't care they just want tocatch fish and they do. Well like I started to say I wanted some larger Blue Gills thought that would be the way to go, But apparentlly not. Again thanks for the come back.

Dick, i live in southern ohio and have been successful at raising the coppernose. i purchased them from a fishery in mississippi called suttles fish farm. dan suttles told me he has shipped the coppernose all over the u.s even to mich. and has had no trouble at all. they will probably just grow slower the farther north you go. i have never lost any of my coppernose. we just put in a new 1/2 acre pond and once again i stocked coppernose and redear.

James thank you for the comeback. I'll try to make a call to that Dan and see what the gentleman has to say about it. I really don't care if they don't grow as large I just don't want them dying on me. I like trying different things. I think next I will try a high protein fish food. I use to feed them all the time but got away from doing so. Again James that you for the comeback and GOOD FISHIN....
James I talked with Dan and he seems to think they will be fine. I'll try a few out to make sure. He does not ship the larger coppernose so he suggested starting then out somewhere they can get a little length on them before putting them in the pond,so they would not get eaten up by my bass. So I'll try a few next spring. Thanks and GOOD FISHIN.
