NICE! Gonna have to start fly fishing for Piks . what weight rod and line you use ? what reel?...I have a rod in the garage that needs a reel and it just might be the one for Pickerel.
i use 9 wt sinking for that fly... you should get an extra spool with floating line on it for fishing poppers in summer. make sure your rod is made for 8/9 wt
Thanks Chris!! What other species have you landed with this set up? I will probably set up a fly reel for my pole .I'll get back to you on the rating of that fly rod in the garage .
The rod is a 9' South Bend model# 6695 Rec. Line wt. is #8/#9

I'm thinking of buying this Cabelas Three Forks Fly Reel model 789
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Three-Forks-Fly-Reel/728601....
that's just like the reel i have on my redington 9 wt. you should get a second spool for it. put a good wf floating line on one spool and this on the other http://www.cabelas.com/product/Scientific-Anglers-Professional-Full... you should put a good 30 lb backing on each one
Got the sinking line and reel ... an extra spool wasn't available . Hope I'm still enthusiastic about this next year but gonna have to wait awhile as ice fishing enters the picture.May have to buy another reel if I see the prospect for topwater .I have a 50 lb backing I could use ...will that screw up the works as far as casting?

no as long as you have a small enough knot.  also there's nothing like catching bass and piks on top on the fly

Actually that backing is 30 lb. test so that should work good. It's the same line I use on tipups.I got two spools of it .
