Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

No doubt about it...it's fall! We have had several nights in a row with temps in the 40's, and local lakes and ponds are cooling off fast. Now they are calling for a string of nice, 70 degree plus days for about a week. Sheeeesh!

I had a good day using 1/8 th oz Rattle Flash Spoons with a night crawler chunk at one small lake in southern PA. Nothing big, but nice action for a dozen gills and a bass. Then, I fished a new to me , small, public lake and got another dozen gills and a crappie on Led Heds 1/64 th oz thread-bodied hairjig in black with a pink head.

After that, I shot over to a friends farm and played around with the hairjig on 2 lb test line. Seems like the gills would take it plain or tipped with a worm...didn't matter. Nicer fish, some over 9 inches, and a bonus 16 inch largemouth.

I'd have to say it was an enjoyable day with a lot of action. I totaled 34 gills, 7 bass and 1 crappie. Caught most of the fish by wind-drifting the jig about 30 inches below a bobber. Fished three different lakes from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. There's lots of bluegilling still left in my neck of the woods before the snow flies!

Steve I am fortunate to have access to 14 different private lakes and ponds within 30 minutes of my house. The last three jobs I have had over the past 22 years have had immediate access to water and I have more than a dozen public waters no more than 40 minutes away. On days I work half days I fish somewhere on the way home. I fish a lot of small waters and public lakes that many people ignore, and often find great bluegilling in them!

Semi-retired, Steve. I will finish up my seasonal job at the marina on Nov 1 and start promptly at Dicks Sporting Goods after that. I actually retired to other pursuits, rather than from just a job. I write 30 to 40 columns or articles a years and I volunteer at other agencies and instruct classes at local facilities on how and where to fish in my region.

At times, retirement can be busier than being in the work force full time!
It's all good!
