Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Seems a little odd to separate this out, but the nearby large lake I hardly ever fish. It's well known and does produce good fish, but I don't really care for it as a kayaking lake because it is so big and popular with waterskiiers in the summer time. In a lot of respects it is similar to (and actually quite near) my home lake, but I gravitate to the other one. This lake does have stripers (haven't done well; big summer die off a few years ago and haven't really recovered) and white bass in addition to the species found in the other lake. But it has one section that's a jewel (to me). At the upper end there is a canoe ramp right at the inlet. Only a few hundred feet upstream is the bottom of the last rapid and the river splits through a couple of large islands in the last rapid, so you can go down river a little ways into the lake and then come back up a different channel that splits, giving you what is basically three different inlets. the depth drops off pretty quick into a largely featureless lake bottom except for having the channels, and it has steep rocky banks on both sides.

White bass will run up into the inlet in the spring in large numbers and it's just a nice paddle, so it will show up in a lot of reports. Crappie have a 10" limit in this lake so slightly smaller ones are in great supply. Limits are often caught and a few are larger; it has a reasonable chance of being the place where I could get a big crappie.
