Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Many of my fishing buddies devote most of their time fishing for Bass....or Muskies.....or Walleyes, but rarely do they target panfish.....I enjoy my time on the water with them, and try not to spread myself too thin throughout the whole wacky bunch....however, when I start to get razzed about how often I like to fish for bluegills by my "buddies"....it seems more like ridicule.

This is the kinda stuff these guys send me....

Not many people can say they have had their fishing technique premeired on In Fisherman.  I would say they are jealous of your angling ability, and your ability to think outside the box.  I like your spooning technique and I've caught both bass and gills on it.   Remember you have to be patient with the foolish people of the this world, and hopefully they will come around to your way of thinking.  Remember all great innovators were mocked and ridiculed.

Bill, They have seen your BLUEGILL and are JEALOUS!!!!!  When you go into someones home a lot of time you will notice  Largemouth, Smallmouthbass mounted on the wall !!!! You will also see Trout, Muskies, Walleye etc....... Except for this site you will never Bluegill mounts on the wall!!!!! The REASON is EASY, TROPHY BLUEGILL are harder to CATCH!!!!!!!!

Oklahoma BLUEGILL and GREEN SUNFISH are a favored bait for flat heads catfish!!!! Channel Cats a treasured!!!!! When someone tells me of catching Channel , I just ask if when they bird hunt are they hunting for BUZZARDS!!!!

Bill, Will always FISH FOR BLUEGILL, He can't help it, like the rest of us HE IS HOOKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if there is a more versatile gamefish/panfish than the bluegill and close kin. Almost always willing to bite, great to teach others about fishing, taste great, fight like demons and are abundant just about everywhere.

Yeah, I've spent a few dollars on panfishing over the years. But most of my bass fishing/tournament angling friends are into their sport to the tune of $50,000 to $100,000, and more, as a lifetime expenditure. And if they dig that, then, cool!

But I can use a $60 ultra light, quality mono and a bunch of my home made jigs, tipped with garden worms I dug, and catch a ton of fish and have all the smiles I want...yes, within 15 minutes from my home! Does it get any better than that? As I like to say...when it comes to bluegill fishing, some kids never grow up! Count me in with THAT crowd!

It may not be the most popular "money' fish out there, but to those who covet the bluegill, no gamefish is more worthy of pursuit. I'm hooked!

Well I dont mind catching a bass here or there. But nothing I meen Nothing beats

hooking a gill with ultra lite tackle and #4lb. line.

ounce per ounce nothing puts up a great fight like the gills. when it comes to a fish fry

a big mess of gills and fried taters with some hush puppies, washed down with some iced tea.  I'd trade a bad day gill fishing for a good day of bass fishing anytime.

you should thank your friends for the lures, just suggest next time they send micro lures. LOL

I think Bruce may of touched on it. A bluegill fry is much tastier than a bass fry. Nothing like a tasty mess of pan fish and I'll take any and all razzing when it comes down to sizzling Gills any day.

Bass? Seems to me I've heard of those. Can't quite picture what they look like though. I'll Google it and see what comes up................

Ah-Ha, now I remember......... we use those in our ponds to provide forage for our Bluegill. Big Bluegill love to eat Largemouth Bass fry. Helps them to grow big and strong. So some people actually target these Bass on purpose? Huh, I guess it takes all kinds...............

HEY MUSKY,

I USED TO FISH for GREEN CARP before I graduated up to Gills, Red ears , and Crappies! One good thing about bass fisherman is they most of the time wouldn't think  of cleaning a bass or two and eating em!!!!!!!! Leave em all for me and my wife, WHO LOVES TO EAT BASS ABOUT 3 POUNDS!!!!!!!!!

ALSO THE BASS get rid of alot of pesky 4" gills !

Keep gillin' Musky.  I would rather use a jon boat and catch a one pound gill on an ultralite. in a  which to me is equivelent to a 5 pond bass on one of those block and tackle rigs those guys use.   Granted, we catch a lot more and I once had a friend who wouldn't go panfishing because he claimed that catching one 5 pound bass is easier and quicker to clean, tastes just as good, and will feed his family of four one night.  Went fishing many times with him and had a half cooler filled with either nice gills or crappie before he got his first bass bite.   Guess who ate better?  Glad he spent the day handling the boat so my family could eat more than one meal for a while.  Nick

I hear you Musky....I bluegill fish out of a "BASS" boat and I can't count the times I get grief when someone asks me if the bass are doing anything...They love the term non-target species which I didn't use until I borrowed it from members of this site.....They all want me to clean them a mess of gills though??????
