Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

The area I'm hitting in the morning is where the Hoosier state record BG came from back in 1972. In addition, I received an email last week from a fisheries biologist who told me of a 2 lb. gill that came from there just a few weeks ago. Supposed to be photos available at a local baitshop, I will see what I can find out.

Tony, round here if it is not a bass, catfish, or crappie, it is just a perch!!!!!!! Used mostly for bait!!!!!!

I hope I get to read your words, Jeff. It's always good to learn from an expert.

I like it...the other side of fishing....Public waters have unique challenges and Tony added some good pointers....I want to add some perspective later as it relates to different public areas.....Might help some of our members locate catchable fish.....

Yes, this is the same spot I wrote about earlier. It is a challenging and unique fishing experience to be sure. I agree Allen, I think a kayak would be right at home there!

Definitely upps the ante to catch a trophy from public waters in my book. I'm proud of the fish I raise, but I am aware that they are afforded opportunities seldom found in nature. That's what makes a trophy fish special. I am still a little surprised when I ask a baitshop owner about large BG, and he shows me photos of Redears, or Gillcrackers however..... to be sure, I saw photos of pure BG also, and they were quite nice, but it amazes me how many people continue to lump the various Lepomids together under the generic "sunfish" moniker. Spread the word BBG faithful, there is a difference!

Alright, Tony.

This is the same place you wrote of before, right?

Catching a whopper in public waters is a special prize, for sure.
