Hey Jeff, welcome to BBG. Can't say I know much about the local waters of SC. Since you are hunting for the gills using flyrods, welcome! I normally don't hunt gills using flyrods, I use ultra light gears with micro light spinning reels. However, I do use fly fishing lures for those panfishes, especially gills. They love them!  However, during cold seasons, the smaller ones remain near the surface, but the larger ones are going deep in the lakes. Streams and creeks, they will do the same during the day. Early morning and early evening, they will hunt near the surface for a few hours.

Welcome aboard Jeff. Enjoy our site and use it. There is lots that goes on. Look at the blogs and forums. There is lot to be learned here all we have to do is use it. You are now part of an interesting bunch of people who have a common goal we all love to fish and fish is what we do when the opportunity arises . When we do this thing we all love to do we are learning and when we learn hopefully we pass on that bit of knowledge that we learned. There is tons of information for us to fine tune our skills. In the same token don't be afraid to share information yourself it may be something we can use ourselves to help us in our fishing endeavors. Then in the same token if you have a question don't be afraid to ask. Almost everybody here will answer your question if he or she knows the answer and it may be something someone else want to hear the answer to but hasn't asked yet. There is also photo's and even some videos so don't be afraid to explore. I know you will enjoy the site because I know you like to fish or you wouldn't have joined you see the interest is there. Where else can you learn and have so much fun doing it. Have fun enjoy the site and GOOD FISHIN..
