Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Here are some squirmy "volunteers" from the yard. These came from beneath a 40 gal. plastic barrel sitting by the garden. I just move the barrel, and then tickle my fingers through the grass/soil beneath. Its kinda like scratching your scalp.

The crawlers don't seem to enjoy the disturbance, and come slithering up out of their burrows.... and I grab them. This pile of future fish bait came from under one of the four such that I have. They now reside in the West Creek Vermiculite Experimental Station, aka, my worm bin! LOL

Welcome to worm ranching, Will.

Im certainly no expert, I just give them what they naturally want. I dig my own and feed them decomposed matter from the compost pile. Im into my third container and its about time for the next size larger.

I've recently taken to the fly rod, but worms are always my backup.

This week I started attempting to raise my own worms. I mainly fish with worms so I thought it would be interesting to try and raise my own. So far they seem to be doing fine. I've got both red worms and night crawlers

Constant supply will definitely yearly David. Most worm farms can't keep up in supplying these golden baits.

I dont know about a constant supply, Leo.

I could probably manage enough to get you growing them, then send some from time to time.

Once winter comes, they will go elsewhere and Im not sure I can find them again. Thats another reason I keep mine out of the weather.

I'm not quite sure about your attrition rate from shipment from your area David. Thank you for your thought about the mailing of jumpers. If you could supply me with constant supply of these jumpers, I would more than willing to provide you the funding for harvesting and mailing.

Leo,

I was wondering about the attrition rate for shipment. I"ll start collecting them for you, and putting them in my worm farm. When I get a good quantity Ill figure out how to ship them.

Death rate is about 5. May be 10%. Start your worm farm and I can say you make bait golds as a side business.

Well thanks Leo.
They ship live chicks by mail so why not worms?
Actually, I was more interested in how many died...what percentage?

Same rate as the "fixed standard shipping" rate for priority from the box that it displayed at the postal office. Verified the stamps that the worm farms sent as well. I was surprised the first few times I received the packages, thinking that there may be some special handling charges.
