Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hey Michael Fishbone Blackmon...is this a shoepick? In Virginia they call them bowfin or grinnel. This is a 30 inch, 10 pounder I caught while catfishing.

Hey Jim, caught me one of those Bowfins on Saturday! fileted it and deep fryed it, man it was good! The meat was soft like jelly but it taste like chicken fingers.

Yes! down here in Louisiana they are called Choupiques by the locals, I never had seen one before moving down here. I've caught a couple of them 20 plus inches and let them go, but they seem to love eatin um here. Nice strong fish though!

Some people consider bowfin/dogfish/grinnel/shoepick/mudfish a delicacy. I have never ate one, but I hear they eat them regularly throughout the south. They are native to the Mississippi Drainage and eastern seaboard rivers and in the south. There are also populations in the north country as well as some Great Lake systems. Great fighters!

I wondered how they taste as well?

Jim i have never heard of that fish before. So where are they located? What do they eat? How are they as seafood?

Cool looking critter!
I caught one like that when I was a kid. It pulled the boat with me in it around and around in circles. Lasted a good 15 minutes. It was my first experience with a dogfish. Kinda scared me.

Yeah...does look like a laker! They are sensational, leaping fighters.
