Good thoughts David!

1. After some thought, I asked it as a question I already knew the answer to - sorry about that. Marabou is a feather, indeed, originally from a stork of the same name. A little googling says it comes from the butt area, around the tail.

It has other natural sources today, too, since it is a very old lure material and marabou storks are understandably in short supply. Turkeys, chickens, and probably other birds offer up their long down for the lure tying business today.

I think of it as a kind of "teaser" in the water. All the little feather 'hairs' go to undulating in the water and are supposed to be enticing. Pulled along quickly, it looks like a streamer-tailed bait; probably much like the bucktail.

But when you stop and hover it, the tail should fan out and look something like an ornamental fishes rear end. Pumping it up and down as you retrieve it, or when it's hovering beneath a slip bobber, makes the tail swell and contract like a swimming creature of soe sort.

I've never caught anything on one that I can directly say was the result of the marabou's action. But when I watch them in the water, doing their thing, well... I can see where the fish might get excited!

2. In one of my books on catfishing, it is mentioned that one sure way to get a cat out of its nest is to hold your hand in front of its nest - while wearing a bright yellow glove. The citation goes on to say that there is something about the color yellow that seems to bring out the worst in nearly all animals. Makes em' mean, or something like it. You may be on to something, John.

Hey, theres something for Leo to investigate further!

Bucktail is Deer hair but I'm not sure about Marabou .I do know that the chenille on the marabou comes undone too quickly after a few fish on the cheap ones I 've been using .Gonna have to learn to tie a good chenille bodied marabou Jig .I've done well with Yellow body/Red Jig Head.

Whats the difference? Bucktail is some kind of hair, and marabou is some sort of frilly feather, right?

David -That's astually a white Bucktail jig I tied and caught most of my fish on yesterday.I did catch   5 fish on a comercial marabou that started falling apart .This white BT in the photo caught 10 fish and is still intact.

Greg -Snagger caught plenty of willow tree branches but doesn't like to brag!
