Do you love big bluegill?
With all the catfish activity I had a drop shot rig out with a chartreuse 1" Gulp minnow/cricket combination and it was killing the two pound class Channel Cats but it got hammered and despite a # 6 circle hook sometimes the fish get ahead of you on the bottom.....No worries, I threw him in with a nice mess of kitty fish.....He was a tick over 10 inches.....Had to explain to my little anglers as well.....This much blood would be hard for the fish to overcome....Part of fishing!

#6 circle and gut hook? Wow. That's one of the rare thing that does occur. Release that baby back into the water, and it would have been another's fish lunch. Best to be yours instead.
I can go months fishing shallow and lip hook hundreds of gills Jim......put it on bottom and the first fish is gut hooked.....it stunk because this fish was sure to be released but he will be a tasty treat mixed in with a pile of catfish filets.....
Excellent fish, and you have to keep them when they are mortally hooked.
Thanks Ken.....this river is only 12 feet deep in this region and I was fishing a drop off...like 8 to 10.......water temperatures for us were 56 to 58 degrees....As aggressive as the catfish were I thought this strike was another, but when it started spinning tight circles, I knew it was a nice bluegill......
nice fish! how deep were you fishing? i may try that technique later on this week.
I would have avoided this post but it's one of those fishing lessons.....Fishing a drop shot for gills can lead to this sometimes! I had just rinsed him off for the picture and this much blood returned.......Not fun but this matador will go into the Little River history book and an upcoming fish fry!
