Ah, didn't know that .Thought they were more of a helgi imitation. At any rate I gotta start using WB's in the streams !

Woolly buggers also look ALOT like a crayfish in the water ;)

He also swears by Soft Shell crayfish for smallies and Carp.

David-John Tertuliani ,in his book ,'Smallmouth Bass and Streams ,swears by 'Wooly Buggers' also. He says he caught more smallmouth with that fly than any other .He also says however Crayfish usually make up the much greater percentage of a Smallmouths diet. Hellgrammites much less available I guess.

Time to start tying flies/jigs in Hellgrammite patterns.  Or more soft plastics!

Yes Allen , when I went to the Delaware River two years ago the guy in the baitshop told us that recently they outlawed turning over rocks and catching hellgies for bait .I guess they don't want the stream eco system disturbed by everyone but I wonder if the bait dealers had something to do with the call. This smallie grabbed this just after it sunk outta my sight .
