After seeing this link I am now convinced the snake I photographed is a Northern Water Snake. The older ones are black and not as banded looking .

What?! Well, only Currently Bruce . One of your Bluegills will be the most popular again soon if you keep getting those HUGE ones you been posting photos of.

Ironically, this is listed as the current "most popular" photo on BBG right now! What does that say exactly?

No wonder we instinctively fear snakes. I see you made the "Gillinator" your profile picture. I guess it's still you John. You ain't been snake swallered have you?

Yes it took about 10 minutes for the 'Gillinator' to swallow the Gill. Here's a shot after it finally got the tail through its mouth.

An Auburn football recruit is asked by the coach, "can you pass a football"? The recruit replies, "golly coach, if I can swaller it I can pass it".

What I want to know is did the Black "Gillinator" Water Snake actually swallow the gill?

Looks like a black one to me John, but I agree with Jen, God Save the Blue Gill!!!!!!!!!!

Ya know Steve it does look like a Black Snake and I might be confused but I always thought Black snakes were not prone to reside by the water like this one does. I am very much confused because water snake photos i've been viewing show more of a banded pattern.

Here is a Black or maybe a Rat snake photo I took the same day very far away from the pond I fished .Gotta admit now

they look the same.

Troy this might not be the same snake but it's the same species.I 've seen a 'family' of three at this fishing spot. Not a great shot of the head but I thought you'd want to see this photo.
