Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I know it looks like a Rock Bass, but they are slightly different. This is basically the southern version

Well, Dick, apparently it is a unique species. Ive never heard of it, either, until it came up here. Many easily confuse it with a Warmouth.

They are native to the South, for the most part.

Now I'm really confused. Looks like a rock bass to me. Looks like a rock bass of a different color.

Yes, if I was fishing on the jetties down at the coast, I'd say I caught a juvenile 'rockie'.

I showed these pics to some of my friends and they all said the same thing - warmouth.

One even mentioned the 'goggle eye' with the red bands.

My guess is that the variations between all these are so subtle as to cause less knowledgeable folks - like me and my buds - to lump all these fish together. This is the first time I've heard of a shadow bass, in fact.

It is a cute little thing, aint it? Im gonna paint my boat in that camo pattern.

A very cool fish! Thanks for posting!  Red eyes like a Rock Bass or a Red Breasted Sunfish.I hope you will tag your other shadow bass photos so they show up in a search by species on this site.
