Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Two, maybe three seasons back I got a selection of micro poppers from Jim Cosgrove. I was impressed with them, and the fish hit the things with some gusto.. Heres an attempt at recreating them.
I need a sharper edge on my cutter, though; the edges arent smooth. Kinda crude, these should work.

I glue my sheets because I bought a bunch of bare ones - no adhesive.

i dont glue my sheets.i buy the tape backed sheets or i get a double faced mounting sheet.i put a book or board on em and stand on it.that and the force of the hammer and punch holds them together nicely.the way i put mine together, the foam head being the last thing i put on and the whole surface of the body being glued to the hook, thread and all dressings.i have been been in the building trades 30 years.i have tried every method mentioned here.IMO the leather punch is the best.i have punched out 100s and 100s with 1 punch.all i'm gonna say about poppers

Great idea Allen. I don't mind getting there my way, though. :)

...wine corks for that - coffee stirrer down the center makes good casting slip floats.  Not free, but a pleasure getting through the bottle to liberate the cork...

David, make friends with a bartender :)  I've seen the bar at my old country club do a contest, guess how many wine corkers in a BIG bottle, with a statement that there was nothing else in the bottle besides the corks.  I think there was around a hundred corks in there.

Good place to get those felt Crown Royal baggies, as well :)

I like the way you think, Jim! 20 cents is just right.

Mark, - I glue the sheets together with Dollar Store household cement. Apply it and spread it evenly with a squeegie. Weighted with a brick, they come out as one thick sheet.

Greg - perfect! I can get 1/4" nipples all day at work.

McScruff, I use steel nipples works good on foam also!!!!!!! You can get them at any hardware store!!!!!!!!

between weeds bass branches and big gills-i sometimes go thru ten poppers in a day.still cheaper than a box of worms.as i preach on here ,i pay less for 100 hooks than 10 of the high priced ones.the most expensive thing i put on a hook is a tungsten bead at about 12 cents,so most of my gill flies cost 20 cents at the most + my time.so i can throw them with abandon.bass flys cost more in time and material but i use 40 lb braid for a leader, usually get them back.

I can see that! I've used wine corks for that - coffee stirrer down the center makes good casting slip floats.
Not free, but a pleasure getting through the bottle to liberate the cork. Wine can be had for 3$/bottle, if you can accept negociant offerings. Me, I got no problem with it!

Now, how about poking that hole for hooks...?

with a set you can make bass poppers add a heavy coffee straw ,slip bobbers for free since u already bought the foam.
