Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Put New Line on Twelve of my Telescopics This Afternoon.......

Restrung a couple (16) footers, two (13) footers, a (12) footer and (7) ten footers as I get prepped for my favorite time of the year..........I have (16) ten footers and usually set (2) up with the same bait so I can quickly change poles if any problems occur.....e.g. wrapped line, knots...etc. I will soon retire the 16 footers for the season and will sail with roughly two dozen 10/12 footers despite only fishing one at a time........

Thanks for posting these pictures, Jeff. Very much appreciated. I want to try these, bet I'll be the only one up here  using them. Caught my very first fish, a creek chub on a cane pole many, many years ago.

I pass through the eye and secure my line with a series of knots and electrical tape several feet down the pole from the eye.........I have photos here showing my preferred method but it's not an exact science.......also remember your eyes will corrode if you don't allow them to dry out after use........this is as simple as setting them in the sun for an hour fully extended and allow collected moisture to dry out.......

Hey Mike.....Happy holidays and I appreciate the questions regarding telescopic poles.......It's not the only technique I use but I really enjoy this method for many reasons........In my region I fish heavy cover and the poles allow for precision that is not available to casting anglers.......I just enjoy having constant contact with my bait and pole and line does this.........The poles have limitations based on their length but look at it like you would line size.......You would have little to no success on the rivers I fish with line under 8 pound test but many anglers swear by it based on their locations and I agree with them......I've caught hundreds of largemouth up to 7 pounds on these poles........catfish over ten.......crappie to three pounds.......bowfin.........carp......the list goes on........I have broken several poles over the years but I take 7,500 fish a year on poles........your line is going to pop sometimes too right.........It is important to have a landing net available for the larger fish although I swing thousands of gills and crappie without reaching for the net.......It's key to never tie your line directly to the eye rather down the pole a bit which spreads the stress throughout the pole.......new models even come with a complete set of eyes and will hold little reels that allow some flexibility when fishing different depths and the likes...........My suggestion is to try it and see what you think........I still cast a lot because I love the feel of ultralight gear with a pound bluegill zipping around.........you have to be close to the fish with pole and line and this will certainly spook fish at times especially in clear water........but my bet is if you catch a few with this fun technique you will always come back to it.........

Oh and one more question if you don't mind. Do you run your line up thru the bottom of the rod and out at the top?

Are the telescopic poles your main "weapons"? Around here in DE idk anyone who uses them but I know down south they are quite popular. I've owned one myself for years and have never really tried it, actually it ended up on my wall as decoration. I am very interested in trying it now after seeing your success. Do you use it to get inside things like falling trees that you may not be able to with a spinning rod? That's how I was planning to use mine. I also was kinda concerned the rod may not hold a fatty on the end of the line because it is so flimsy. Have you had many break on you?
