Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Been making streamers this week. Did some Mickey Finns, Scrappy Bugs and now this, a streamer version of the classic Royal Coachman.
Varied it by using magenta micro-flashabou wound on as a dub noodle for the body. The pattern normally calls for red floss on the body. The material came from a hair extension, purchased at the local discount store.
It's a pretty fly, but a bit of a PITA at the vise. At least the head turned out nice.

Well thanks, Greg, for sharing that insight.

I didn't get into tying to save money. Any hobby, in my experience, starts somewhere around $100 and goes up from there... usually in $50 increments! I started it because as they say, "sooner or later, every fly fisherman worth the name ties his own."

And, since I'm inordinately bad at actually CATCHING anything, tying flies at least keeps my hand in. When people ask me what I like to do, I can - with a straight face - tell them,"Oh, I'm into fly fishing."

Most people accept that, and stop there. Most people still believe fly fishing to be an arcane and mysterious art. Which works in my favor, since only rarely do I have to skirt around the actual relationship I share with the fishes, i.e., I love to catch them and they succeed in eluding me. It's an unrequited love, you might say.

But, tell people you like to fly fish and, well... they give you "that" look, perhaps mumble something about their grandfather and that is that. The image is preserved.

Maybe thats as good a reason to tie as any.

Well, Fuzzy, I reckon you reach a point where tying becomes its own reward.
You tie them because you want to see how they look. Or, maybe, you want to experiment with a new technique or material. For me its also a "quiet time" thing.
Regardless, do two or the a day and you'll soon have a buttload of 'em...

I understand that, McScruff!  I've got bugs I tied up last Winter that have yet to be fished.

Looks like you got enough great flies to last you for a year or so with all those active days of tying.

Too late, Allen - I'm doomed. Cashed in... stick a fork in me, I'm done.

I hit on a scheme, in fact, to help pay for tying materials. Everyone here at Hovel McScruff is getting coal for Christmas.

It's brilliant!
