You know it's funny because I fish quite a bit in a lake that could just possibly harbor a California State record Bluegill or Redear, maybe even a Black Crappie also.  Conceivably even a World Record of any one of these three fish.  I'm in a float tube most of the time, so I'm not sure what I would do to keep the big fish alive.  Put it on a stringer for sure, then I guess try to flag down a friendly fisherman that might pick me up and drive us to the marina.  I did catch a giant crappie a couple years ago, and I just put her on a clip stringer, laid her down on my measuring tape for a couple quick pics, said goodbye and released her.  I knew it wasn't a State record fish, but thought it may have been a lake record...  only to find out that no records are kept for crappie because they were not "legally" introduced into the lake.  Guess they could have started with mine if I had brought the fish in to weigh...

thats why I carry a giant cooler with an airrator so if i do cathc that state record I can keep it alive.

You know, I'm looking at this photo and realize that this record Redear is still alive.  Whatever happened to this great fish?  Was it killed and molded for a replica mount?  It's just too bad it wasn't donated alive to someone like Bass Pro Shops that has a big public aquarium so it can continue to thrive and astound all of us fishermen.  I look at some of the Bluegill in my local BPS and am amazed at their sizes.  And I heard that most where caught out of my local lake!
