Smith caught the 4.14 pound, 17. 25 inch fish Feb. 16 on a Dropshot worm on 8 pound test line at the Metropolitan Water District intake at the south end of Lake Havasu.

Comment by Troy Dorman on May 1, 2011 at 6:20pm: I've read a little on the Colorado River/Lake Havasu and evidently Redear were introduced there to combat an invasive mussel or something. It's widely known that 2 and 3lb redear are common in those waters.

Redears are about the only known freshwater fish to aggresively eat these invasive critters. Redears grow much faster than bluegill on average and are generally a thicker bodied fish. I've compared fillets from a 10inch redear to a 10inch bluegill and there's a fairly big difference in mass. It's actually more noticable in the smaller fish, like the 8inchers, big difference.
