Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Shotting a Floating Rapala is catching a few fish and getting several follow ups and swipes in 50 degree Water. Lift and drop to bottom . Perch are coming up off bottom for it . Shot at 6-8" from lure and it works .Put the shot closer and it's ineffective .

lake perch are about the only fish i fish for just to eat.when the schools come in it can be fantastic and doesn't require much skill or special equipment.get some bait in front of them and reel em in.the school is either there or its not.they roam the shoreline in early summer to spawn and early winter to feed.some guys chase them around in boats but thats if you can burn 50 -100 bucks worth of gas.

Well I can see for your situation it is cost effective .I don't often keep fish I catch but I do at least a few times a year.

Jim,
Every fishing book I have seems to suggest shrimp as a good bait for panfish.
Either as a finely minced chum or as hook bait, it gets mentioned.

Shrimp is one of the six TROTLINE baits allowed by the SC FISH AMD GAME people.

i get the cheapest frozen shrimp i can find john.not the good fresh jumbo shrimp from the meat counter.

I've had success with the shrimp on big cats...never thought about it but it might just be a great tipping bait for winter panfish! Still got some from the summer...gonna try this! Thanks

we get  a bag of frozen medium i guess frozen shrimp.not that expensive.we use them for perch and trout on a crappie rig.just slice chunks off to cover the hook a size 6 or so .bring home what you dont use and throw back in the freezer.it is vertical fishing like ice fishing almost .just bait the 2 hooks and let the weight on the end take it to the bottom, tighten up and lift when they hit.guys use minnows but we switch to shrimp in the fall and winter.lake perch is a lot more per pound than shrimp.limit is 15 and i keep none under 10 inches.usually get a few over 12.so a good mess of fillets and no dipping in a half frozen minnow bucket

Sounds like fun fishing off the pier ! Ya got me curious how big a hunk you tempt those Crappie with .I have done well on Crappie from a boat around this time of year ,just haven't fished from the boat much this year.

Ah ,I see Jim but at 10-12 bucks a pound or more it seems more expense than I 'd like to consider. How many bait sized pieces can you cut from one shrimp . I pay too much for worms and crawlers from the bait shop but haven't made the effort to find them myself .

john-i am talking chunks of salt water shrimp.we just buy on sale frozen uncooked.way cheaper than frozen soft shell crayfish.since we fish off piers and seawalls on lake michigan we use crappie rigs with 2 hooks.pretty much straight down off the wall.doubles are common.they head for the shoreline around thanksgiving.
