It's a classic technique, that's for sure, usually thought of as a walleye/perch set up.
Bluegill seem to respond better to spinnerbaits, as far as I can tell with my limited exposure.
I wonder how these might work with propeller blades?

yes ,drifting basins is key too

My uncle used to use a rig very similar to this with a minnow and would drift. He would come back with many perch and crappie.

I also try fishing this rig to the sides or in creek channels in the lake .Better oxygen content for summer fish .

Hey Carl and David! I read in one of my fishing books that a bait is more productive with a spinner added and decided to run with it .In seasons past, I have added spinners for extra flash and vibration, ahead of spoons baited with worm pieces  when water is muddy or off color .The spinners proved successful. I feel in the off color water ,scent and vibration are helpful .This is a bottom dragging rig which I retrieve slowly till I get hit ,then I'll drop it back hoping the fish takes with conviction. I've been fishing "treated ' water that has a milky green color to it and try to get this rig close to bottom for Perch /Crappie and Gills. Worm pieces threaded on the long shank hook are the best bait I've used  in the Summer .Hot dog pieces work pretty good too .I like having both with me .

I've caught a few on these rigs, too, but I've never really wrung them out as a technique.
Watching you close on this one, John.

PS which bait do you feel gives the best result? And how are you fishing these - Cast and retrieve, drop and jerk, etc.?
