I hate the dreaded hook set "nothing but air" thinking your setting the hooks into a bass and the line is sheared in esox's teeth. Lost alot of good bass baits.

Thanks Dick. I've caught northerns in MN, as a kid. Still remember my first one - caught it on a Dardevle spoon.
I just tend to follow the old usage and refer to the entire esox clan as, "pike."
IT's not real precise, I know... Just a funny quirk of mine.

David there is big difference's between a pike and a musky and although they both have the same body shapes that is were it ends. Our muskies tend to be larger and catching one is an experience not soon forget. They fight harder and longer and share with the pike a set of teeth that can do some serious damage. They are much harder to catch but if you do hook one hang on. Our pike are much more numerous and also fun to catch with one direction straight down. Our pike are much more numerous and much more likely to take a bait usually caught with med the large bass baits my favorite being a spinnerbait . Ice fishing is a great time to pike fish using a large creek chubs under a tip up. Pike taste good but they have that dreaded y bone and I never did master the filleting procedure to get it out. Besides the body shape they don't come close to looking alike but both very fun much the catch.

John, you'll recall that one last year I caught; it was that size.
They don't get much bigger, so you done good.
Dick and Ken, you guys get northerns and muskies - I just tend to call them all the the same name: pike...
Its an older generic term. Either way, they are great to catch and good eating

That's what I was thinking Ken. I have never caught a pickerel but have got lots of pike so I guess we haven't got them around here either. I assuming they fight the same and I know pike have one place to go straight down and a blast to catch but slimy as all get out when you take them off the hook.

Beautiful fish John! Never caught one... rare in my area. Sounds like a helluva ride on ultra light!

Hey Rick-This is a pretty good size Pickerel but bigger exist up to 25" in my catches here in NJ . Better fisherman  have caught bigger .If I could paint I'd be a happier man .Enjoy your talent !

David ,you are right both the Pickerel I caught today  fought to get back to the thick weeds I called them out of !

Dick, this fellow was hooked on an UL pole and 4# test and was a test to get him to the net .When he saw the boat he peeled out again .Keep the short rod high. above your  head . The other smaller one hit a Crankbait on a Medium heavy rod with 12# test and didn't stand a chance .

I like like how they stay below so you don't know what they are until you get them up.
