here is my favorite setup for this type of fishing

  1. Berkely 6ft light action spinning rod fast tip.... this rod does a great job with smallmouths when they try to throw the hook.
  2. Mitchell 308 with 20lb braid... when my bait gets stuck on a log or broken rubble 90 % of the time i could snap it free or straighten the hook to pull free. this line is very sensitive.
  3. Berkely 3 in ripple shad olive in color is my local favorite. bounce and snap it off the bottom. i even let it rest on the bottom and dead stick it. deadly deadly deadly

thanks guys

quite a few spots to fish from on shore in town... especially this time of year ... lmbass smbass and northerns are up against the steep banks herding baitfish. swim baits in the 3 - 4 inch range are deadly especially now thru thin ice.

Leo... the small reservoir here in town is fed by 5 rivers and creeks and always has a slight current. a few years ago this reservoir was nearly unfishable with its brown silty water... zebra mussels have cleared it up and fishing is spectacular.

Great finds. Any water flow from the channel? Looks like some wind touching the shore area.
