Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This bug was a modified "cotton candy" stinger with rubber legs added.....turned out it didn't catch like it's legless predecessor.......

INTERESTING. I like to remember that nothing matters - not "jiggle", not wriggle and not color.... If there are no fish.
We so often think a lure is a siren call; throw it anywhere and it will call the fish from far and wide. "That color is the 'secret', fellas, I'm telling you!!"
But the rule Jeff and Jim and the other good anglers adhere to is, they fish were fish are.
Simplistic? Yes. But this is probably more important than anything else we do.

I have been drop-shotting much of the past month for bottom hugging gills in local lakes, to include some monster hybrids that are in deeper weedy areas. I should try it with some of the lures mentioned here, just always used #8 Aberdeen hooks and live earthworms about 24 inches above the weight.

Above, eater gills on drop-shot rig.

Matts killer hybrid sunfish on the same rig, taken from deeper, 12 ft weedbeds.

I'll let everyone know how it goes.....the slow fall tooty speaks of sounds good on a drop.....

"Drop shot" is a vertical-fishing technique, from the Bass Fishing world.  Basically, you tie a weight on the end of your line.  Some distance above the weight (your choice), tie on a hook.  Put some kind of thin, small, highly-mobile soft plastic on the hook.  Drop it down to bottom, and bounce the bait up and down.  You don't want to "jig" it.  In fact, you don't really want to lift the weight off the bottom.

I would be willing interested in how a Silent Stinger works as a drop-shot myself.  Heck, I might even try it sometime this Spring.

Yeah I wouldn't call it anything scientific......just an idea based on observation......Drop shot may be different depending on the angler......I place the weight below the bait when I call it a drop shot which suspends the bait off the bottom....how much to be decided by the angler which may depend on bottom composition such as heavy grass that you may want to be above........I use it more often in deep water environments which I don't have much of around here.......Thanks for the good luck wishes.....just should be fun wetting a line together....

HEY JEFFREY CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW IT WORKS OUT FOR YA. IN my own way I think I do that now on occasion and don't know for sure what a drop shot rig is . Ya gotta remember this is TROY GROVE , things change slowly here buddy. Once in a while I'll just put on a big spit shot to get em down to bottom , but I place it about 1 foot above the Silent or Bead head and then let it fall slowly the last foot after the split shot is on the bottom. I'll be real interested to see your results next weekend buddy and good luck.........

Thanks for the comments  and observations guys...I'll be pondering this for a week!

One thing I intend to try this upcoming week......one of Tooty's bugs on a drop shot rig.  That hollow head as well as the hook eye placement just screams "try me"..........

HEY TONY , VERY INTERESTING ABOUT YOUR OBSERVATIONS ON WHAT MAKES A FISH BITE A STATIC LURE. I think you may be onto something there about the color. Yup I also believe ya about once starting to move and I"ll inject here about that....... I like legs on bugs for the most part , with the exception of the Silents . I also like Marabou for attractant as to movement......

HEY ALLEN , I DOOOOOOO FISH EM UNWEIGHTED IN THE SPRING .... DICK TABBERT just about half hour ago asked me were the video was for tying the silents. It's on my page way down towards the bottom and Leo put a link there to go to you tube.
Mine are less than 100th of an ounce Allen. Just a plain old cheap hollow bead from chain I spose.
