Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Here's one I've known of for awhile, but never got around to tying.

Gaeta is an old world city in Italy, near Naples. In Roman and medieval times, it figured prominently in the intrigues of the country.

Considering it's long history and rocky, stream filled countryside, it's no wonder it has developed a bit of unique fishing lore over the years. A devoted fly-angling fraternity has been flailing the waters of the region, apparently, for here is a local style "nymph" fly.
A simple fly, it's just three beads, some hackle, and thread. That's all that goes into it. For fast streams and currents, metal beads are used. For the soft and still waters of ponds and back bays, I'm using glass beads for a slow-fall presentation.

These are #6 and #12. The latter has had a traditional fiber tail added to the normally tailless Gaetan pattern.
A nifty subsurface attractor, Im pretty sure the sunfish and bass will go for it. What do you think?

Yeah - I'm not much of a decimator.

Very nice hairy little guy. Perfect for spring and summer. Show the result without decimating the fish population.

Thanks man.
Like any such fly, short strips around cover should get the gills' attention.
Good sub-surface probing fly.

"I like the glass beads .Where do you get those? oh , and cool ol' history lesson!"
Glass beads from WalMart.

"Nice work Jeffrey .Always like red thread ties . What material is that hackle and tail?
The tail looks like squirrel"
Tail: Fibers from a feather. Dunno what kind.
Hackles: random neck and soft hackles.

Who is Jeffrey, anyway?
