Do you love big bluegill?
20150430-Kerswill Lake “Bluegill Opening Day” thought I could squeeze my opening day trip in April so I rushed out to the lake and forgot the fly rod and much equipment. Left the Bait at Home! … Even the Gulp Maggots. So I ventured forth anyway and found water temps approaching 60 degs and some bluegill activity again in the shallows. Wind conditions were calm and it was mostly sunny with air temps in the low 60’s. Battery was dying on a full charge with the electric motor so I discontinued use. Called the wife and asked if she could drive over with my equipment I left behind… she refused!... last time I buy her beer … lol.
There was a small area that has been getting my attention that I caught the 90 percentile crappie… motoring into the area I noticed significant surface activity which ended up being bluegill… when the wind dyed I could see in the clear shallows significant school size of bluegill … many sub 6” ers but I could see numbers of larger size gills along with.
Proceeded to catch many on the fixed bobber rig and the Spring Cricket produced a nice Pumpkin seed and a 9” class gill. Some great action many in the smallish class but on another day I would of filleted em.
Over all great opening day!

thanks Joe...the schools of fish have been very shallow and i can see them moving in large numbers along the shore in 4 ft or less of water. spot them very easily against a back drop of algae and bottom grass. many, many sub 5 inchers nearer the top. what i thought were smaller crappie turned out to be larger bluegill. you could see them plainly through the water. heck i would have a blast catching those guys all day long at any size.
Sounds like a blast. Remember small is good and it's the pull on the line.
That seems to work for me :)
Nice day Slip.......good testimony!
