I will Also Seek to Catch an Even Rarer Species of Spotted Sunfish...the Orange....

A very isolated Sunfish species that I may get an opportunity to fish later this week in southern Louisiana.....Orange Spotted Sunfish

But like several of the other recent discussions.......I often though an "orange" spotted sunfish might be a hybrid of some sort......perhaps a red spotted X bluegill........just makes you wonder when they are so isolated to a particular region..........But I've caught them piled up before similar to other spawning events, and every one of them are covered with the brilliant orange spots that clearly separate it from it's cousin the red spotted sunfish.....Just something else to think about....

I didn't get a chance this year Ben but I'm hoping around the holidays......I know of three bayous in Southeastern Louisiana that hold these Orange Spotted Sunfish......I've caught quite a few over the years with my largest at just over 6.5 inches.....Red spotted are the most common down where I grew up and are often called "Stump Knockers".......
