Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Don dropped over today for a little rod time in the pond.
He struck first fish, using a little top water, bug-eyed gurgler of his own design. Even though this small pond warms quickly, the fish are still kinda cold. But, they were moving a bit and curious enough to take a swipe at his bug.
Don is the consummate fly angler - he has many cool gadgets and rods. He can get a loop in the air and keep it swirling like a wizard. It's great to watch.
Glad you came over, Don!

The pond does have fish, all wild and unmanaged. The owner put bluegill in a few years back, and then bass. He wouldn't care if I fed the pond, and I may do that. I also bring fish back from the lake, and I've caught what are surely hybrid gillcrackers from it.
When it heats up, the fishing gets better.

I like that Don is an earnest angler, but affable at the same time. It's the best combination to have, IMHO. And like every polished fisherman, he becomes a kid again when a fish is on the line.

Id also like to extend a special thanks to Dons wife, Dianne. She is healing from surgery but still encouraged him to come on out.

Looking forward to a repeat.

I had a great time, that's a nice little pond he has there. I was really surprised to see that our subsurface flies were totally ignored. In cold water the wet flies usually catch the fish....but not today. Every once in a while we would see a swirl here or there so we put away the cypret minnows and tied on a size 10 foam spider. I broke the ice with the fish pictured, but David caught the next one (about the same size) and then he caught a nice little Bass. I have a feeling when the water warms up a bit, that pond will produce some nice fish. David may be a little modest, he seems to handle a fly rod pretty well. I was coaching him a little here and there ( all the while trying not to be a "pain in the neck") but I think it was more a combination of Spring training and fishing a fly rod he wasn't used to. ( I let him toss my little 9 1/2 foot 3wt and I believe I may have planted a vision of an UL fly rod in his future). Anyhow, The air temp was in the 70's so it was a most enjoyable day ( can't wait until the water temps are a bit warmer)........Thanks McSruff..........Don in SC

He has prolly forgotten more than I'll ever know.
Next time he's gonna try and teach this old miscreant a fee techniques.

It was a great time, Jeff. We only spent a couple of hours, but it was fun and we caught a few fish.
I'm looking forward to doing more of it through the season.
