@ John - Ive heard the same about them. Their flesh is soft and murky, and they have an off taste. But hey you cant know til you know... you know?

@ Tomas - this is how I best remember them. We used them in Florida for bass, although not as big as 7". When I caught my first ones here in SC, closer to 8 and ten inches, I didnt even know what they were!

I've usually caught them on small worm chunks, and Berkley Gulp Maggots/Asticots, natural color.

Hook size is the usual #10 or #12 I use for bluegill. I've hit them on both plain hooks and 1/100th oz jig heads. These are straight lined - no float, no weight. I've had them hit bait beneath a float, and that happened the first time. I was fishing for bluegill and was surprised to find this fast fighting fish on the line. But I soon found floats and other gear wasn't necessary and was as much a bother as anything.

I like them on a long cane pole best. Mine are 15' and 16'. Just swing out the baited hook, let it fall through the school and play one in. Then do it again.

I want to try one in the pan, too - maybe next season.

David very small mouths what do you catch them on and what gear, hook size etc. when you target them?

I catch these by the scads in one of the local ponds. When they are hitting, you can catching nothing else and the fun is non-stop.
