Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

These are my goto Bluegill flies. The middle left is a soft hackle and I use various colors, orange, yellow, green and sometimes natural colors of browns and greens. The popper is a new design for me. I have always used cork in stead of craft foam.

YUP I'VE been using the light wires for years on the regular bead heads . Very easy to bend to get the bead over the barb ......

Another vote here for light wire Aberdeens.

There's a lot to be said for Aberdeen hooks.  Cheap, readily available, and like you mentioned, easily bent to recover them from a snag.....

I am sure you are correct Allen....I normally use Aberdeen hooks which are light. Maybe if I had used a little heavier hook the flies may have keeled better. I use the aberdeens so if I snag them all I have to do is pull hard enough to bend open the hook and then re-bend and continue fishing. I don't need to dig out my fly box, find a replacement, and re-tie. Guess I am just lazy.

I've tied some size 12 Gurgle-Pops, never had a problem with the foam causing it to lay on its side.

Pretty good ideas, Ray.
I like the idea of super gluing the legs!
Really great.

Sorry I forgot.....I found that on the small versions the two layers of foam will cause the fly to float on its side. Never have the problem with the single layer of foam

Comment by Ray Ditzenberger on April 8, 2014 at 3:08pm

Yep...almost identical. On the small ones I tie I just use one layer of foam. I cut the foam off at a point and I tie it in backwards. Sometimes I use chenille for the body and sometimes I just use thread for the body. The just pull the body over towards the front and tie down. Then add legs at the body tie down point. I have been known to use CA to glue the legs in an 'X' to the bottom of the foam before tying down. Either works fine. The fish don't seem to care which way the legs are tied in.

That is interesting and I will see what I can find out bout the Gurgle Pop. I use the Eagle Claw #6 quite a bit I think the number is 84......I do use a "Gurgler" in larger sizes. In the salt too. I have always tied white, chartruse , and black. They are big enough that I don't have any trouble seeing them so I never tried yellow. I prefer hair bugs for bass. Mostly just because I enjoy tying them.

Ray, your yellow spider is EXTREMELY close to the Gurgle-Pops that I tie.  I have read many, many reports on Gurgle-Pops, and they all seem to say the same thing; "Yellow" is the only color worth tying.

I have caught many Bass on a Gurgle-Pop.  I use size 2 plain-shank Eagle Claw hooks (think baitholder without the barbs on the shank).
