Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Ive been reading alot about the old North England wet flies, or "spiders" and this inspired these. Im calling them, "Sucky Butt Yorkshires" - party because I like the flashy tag on the butt and.... they suck compared to the true traditional versions.
I don't have the traditional materials, though, like snipe and dotterel, so I had to make do. I also like a bit more hackle than the Olde Bligthy anglers preferred.
I've named them after the fashion common in Northern England where these originate.

1. Top, Sorta-Partridge and Orange.
2. Bottom, Sorta-Partridge and Blue
3. Left, Ginger and Sword (peacock)

Dave

I sir applaud your work, North Country Spiders are some of my favorite flies to fish. Would love to see your take on a Stewarts Black Spider.

Tanks Jim - I truly love the Ray Bergman Wet Flies. They are gorgeous works of art. One of his, the Big Meadow, graces my computers desktop. In case you're interested, here you go: http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/category/ray-bergman-colle...

For the upcoming season Im going to spend considerable effort on these Yorkshire style flies. I have a theory that big bluegill actually like a smaller bite. One guy catches one on fat Rat-L-Trap and soon everyone is out there beating the bushes with such things.

But big bluegill are small feeders and we should cater to that. I have caught fish on these smaller flies and they seem to hit them pretty hard. I think they could be, if not THE ONE, One of the Ones.

And youre right - the obsession and the tinkering are the allure.....

good job david.i have studied them a little myself.i used to pick up some british fly magazines.they really get into it on a whole different level than we do over here.the eastern and catskill flies especially, the ray bergman flies are quite interesting also.all flies are a little piece of some other fly.the cool thing is not many people try to patent a fly.information is shared freely pretty much.all most people want is a little credit for their idea.i have a hard time not endlessly changing things as i go.all the fun comes from the tinkering and messing with new materials and then fishing them.but life is short and i have lots of nice flies that will never leave the fly box.by spring i will have a dozen or 2 new types and hopefully will find the ONE
