for what its worth--  I am convinced fish have a keen nose and can smell the difference of any type of offering. have someone fish with crickets only;; and right next to them; someone using worms;; see who catches more!  several years ago i talked at length with some bass pros about scent and how; or if it affects fish.  ( Bill Dance; Rick Clunn; Denny Bauer; Jimmy Houston; several others).  it was put to me this way;; so I will pass on exactly what they said.  A bait; ( like a rubber worm; lizard or such) combined with a scent is 2 to 3 times more attractive to a fish. its like driving in your car on a nice warm sunny day; you have your windows down. you drive by a flashing neon sign;; you notice it; but dont pay it a lot of attention. then you smell;; fresh hot delicious bbq; or something of that sort;; hungry or not;; you turn around cause you just have to have a bite of it!!    tha is exactly what was said to me several times by experienced bass pro guys.  and-- i have found out;; that by tipping a jig or fly; my fish catching ratio is a lot higher!!    and like Dick Tabbertt; and several others;; would love to come across a really good jig or fly; that could be used any time of the day; year; or under any conditions;; and really be a fish catcher without tipping!!    by using dropers with popping bugs;; is about as close as i have come to  being able to really catch gills without tipping.

As you know I tie flies and jigs. Everything I tie is meant to fish solo I never tip, but that's me. If someone fishes my baits tipped more power to them the proof is in the results. I'm positive that tipping does increase the bite ratio and the fish will hang on to the fly/jig longer. I'm sure if I went out fishing with someone that tips we used the same jig/fly they would more than likely beat the pants off of me. That's just my preference as tipping is theirs I do believe that tipping is a plus and a preference and after all I'm still searching for that perfect Fly/jig where no tipping is needed..

We've certainly discussed this issue before. Where does the lure/jig end, and the live bait begin??

I ask this with all respect due to the many fine jig/bug/lure fabricators here on the site.. " Does it really matter? Does all the time, and attention to detail spent on a homemade jig or bug, all the specific fur or feathers, just the precise amount of wrapping and dubbing....does it really matter? If the angler is adding protein to the hook, what aspect of the lure is catching the fish?

In my opinion only, no lure/jig/bug can truly be ruled a success unless it consistently catches fish without adding bait.

If I tear a cigarette butt in half, spray paint it pink, thread it on a hook and add a live cricket, will it catch fish? I'll bet it would. If the folks who raise crickets discover a way to feed them a substance that turns them pink, will there even be a need for a jig at all, or will a plain bare hook suffice? I still submit, and this is only my opinion, that it just takes a splash of color when live bait is added to the offering. A great deal of the detail may even be lost, once protein is crammed onto the hook and restricts the motion of the fur or feathers.

Thanks Jeff.......I always pick a lure based on my preferences and tip 100% of the time.......I'm not as sensitive about the lure catching fish naked.........Even tipped some baits will out fish others on a particular day.......I even tip beetle spins and have much better results than throwing it naked......

I've tested those jigs here in my home waters.  Crappie love them, even untipped.

Nice. Have you tried that without a cricket on it?  I can catch a fish on almost any bait or lure when a cricket is put on it.  It's a good way to see if your new lure is any good!
