"what happens if and when the boat breaks thru?"
I wondered if anyone would ask about that. I carry 100' of rope with me, and since I'm pond fishing I can reach a bank....in other words, I tie the rope to a tree on shore, and feed it out behind me. Normally, I can "kick" the boat along with one foot...like a scooter. If I break through, I retreat to the end of the boat furthest from the tree, (to lighten the end I need to get back up on the ice), and pull. I've never been stuck.
Fishing this way isn't easy, or even overly productive. But it is possible!

nice tony-i too have deployed the jon boat before on the ice.usually late in the season tho when the ice is thick but soft.now that i fish mostly public water they wont let you on unless they think the ice is safe and no way are they gonna let me bring a boat on the ice.i know guys used to ice fish off the docks in the harbors in chicago.i dont think they allow that any more
Wow...out of a jon boat in a pond...gives me ideas, though!
