Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

The first fish of 2015 have fallen.
My neighbor has a small
pond, and I test out flies there. It's all catch and release, since they aren't my fish.
Bluegill and bass...

Rod: 5/6 wt
Line: 5/6 FWF
Leader: 10 ft, hand tied, 20" 3 lb tippet.
Fly: #10 olive, bead head soft hackle...
Olive thread
Gold wire rib
Brown Wyandotte feather
Silver bead

It's the time of year for small, swimmy little aqua-nymphs. So I cast, count down near the bottom, and then strip-and-lift the rod tip.
This mimics something rising up from the bottom gunk, some hopeful, buggy thing making a break for freedom... or into the mouth of a winter-hungry fish.
