Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Cut holes and fished ,3-5 pm and only two fish ...frozen guides in 15 degree weather made the hook set on light biters (more like a pull) a tough outing .Both fish hit a small Hildebrandt flutter spoon with a Trout nibble attached .

In New Jersey ,there  is no size limit on White Perch and you can keep up to 25 .

Allen ,I'll have to try White Perch chunks on some channel cats some day .

Mc Scruff ,thanks for pointing out the tounge scraper patches .

This little White Perch from yesterday is getting some attention I see . After reading the description in this link  of ,Morone Americana ,its easy to understand why they are considered a nuisance and invasive . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_perch

They feed largely on walleye eggs and prey favored by Walleye, true perches and White Bass . Although these White Perch are members of the Bass family they have rough scales like a Yellow Perch . The  White Perch fights better than a same sized Yellow Perch .

Jim ,I don't see white Bass around here but they may be in some lakes near me .I've seen pics and you're right they look similar but the single lateral line without stripes is White Perch indicator.

Jim, white perch are in the same family as white bass. They dont get near as big, however. A 12" white perch is a whopper.

In fact it is hard to tell the juveniles apart, without looking for the tongue scraper patches in their mouths. White perch are not classified as anything but invasive here. White bass populations are on the decline everywhere and one must be very careful to not get them mixed up.

Jim, that's exactly what a "White Perch" is, just a little smaller.  Little suckers are invasive here in OK, I've caught a few.  Not allowed to return them to the water alive.  I usually turn them into cut bait for catfish.

15 has been warm around here john and the wind is causing blizzard conditions on sunny days.the tents a pain but you can stay out all day

Jim ,no tents for me .I brought a bucket with three rods and an auger and a vest with lures .Dressed in thick layers and was hoping the evening bite would be better than it was . It was nice getting out ,even if I had to do it alone .
