Thank you Jeffrey! Not sure the New Jersey bodies of water I fish will yield the shrimp numbers like you're getting but this is all certainly worth knowing !

John I have a scoop net with a very fine mesh and a sturdy handle to dip in and around the grass beds....Sometimes they're so plentiful it may only take a scoop.....You have to pick through the grass you scoop and pick them out and put them in a little bucket of water to keep them alive....add some ice to cool the water and firm up the shrimp for more durable hook placement......Remember they normally live in two feet of water or less when deciding where to try........In marsh Grasses they will cling to the grass strands and embed themselves in the grass for safety.......

Thanks guys....just hope it may trigger one new person to consider grass shrimp.....The Crappie we've caught the last month have been full of them....

Jonathan, there are quite a bit of grass shrimp in the northern and southern brackish coast line. The inland water body won't have them, but any water within 50 miles from the deltas and bays will have them.

A friend of mine who grew up in North Dakota and fished Devil's Lake said the lake was full of grass shrimp. That is what helped make the yellow perch so fat there. He said when they would drill a hole ice fishing, the shrimp would flush onto the ice once the auger broke through the last bit of ice. I have seen some of his pictures of 15" perch that weighed over 2 lbs.

I've never seen a grass shrimp, I wonder if their range extends to California, or are they an east-of-the-Mississippi thing?

Great post and awesome info..... many pondmeisters go to great lengths in order to establish grass shrimp in their ponds. Great natural forage.

This is a great post Jeffrey .How do you catch them? I have seen small ones 1/2' and less when I've pulled up weeds on my lure and I know Yellow Perch have spit up the same sized ones when hooked and landed .Seeme to me this natural bait would be killer for any fish that swims!
