There are large bass and catfish in this lake. I'm thinking it's the bass though. I've have giant largies come after the crappies when I catch them in march and april. Also the large bass I have been catching all have red gums and red in the back of there mouths. Talked to a bass guy and he told me that it was from the bass eating crawdad's, but could also be from attacking the crappies. These large bass and large slabs share this spawning area so it's possible. Mid night the bass are closer to shore chasing around shad up on the surface as the morning comes the shad and bass go much deeper and the crappies seem to be more active

I understand completely, that's why I never asked.  The other "thing" that I think that mark would come from is your original thought... A Largemouth Bass.  Was there a similar mark on the crappie's other side?  Bass do have some rather rough teeth and a strong bite.  Wow! I just now thought of another possibility... A big catfish could and would try to grab a good-sized crappie!

If it was up to me I'd take a few people there when I could, BUT it's not up to me. I'm just a good friend of a resident and he only let's a few people into the lake to fish it. If things change I'd let you know. Plus the residence have a fit when non-residense bring in other non_residence to fish. The patrol and the lake staff all look at me as a resident since I've fished there a lot in the past 3 to 4 years. Your not the only person that ask's me if I can take them in to fish. The guy who live's there doesn't even fish(as with most residence) so they don't understand the fisherman and there friends.

I'll give you my last option only if you promise to take me to that lake.. Ha!

Yeah, makes sence Jeff. What would be the next option

Could be a Great Blue Heron or even a smaller Black or Green Heron, but these birds don't usually hit big fish like this crappie and also they strike from above, and your fish has a mark on it's belly, not back or side.  Maybe a turtle, but as quick as turtles strike, there would be more than just a cut...  Who knows...

I now believe it was one of those crane looking birds cause I see them standing on shore and in the tree's looking for that easy catch. I now believe these are the culprits of the attacks. It's amaizing how these birds eat such large fish.

Seems like those gar take over lakes and they don't look like fun to unhook. I enjoy float tubing and if I seen a 15 lb gar eat my crappie and pop a hole in my float tube I'd be a little ticked. Sorry man, you can keep those gar.

By the way I'd still like to catch one gar or two one day

No kidding??? I thought those things could live anywhere. Can I ship you some? We got them up to 5 feet long.

Last May I was fishing for bluegill and a small gar, about 18", hit my cricket and round and round we went on my 4# line. I was trying to tire him out so I could get my hook out with my pliers without getting him in the boat or having him break off my taclke. I had him up beside the boat and was reaching to get the hook when a catfish that ahd to weigh over 30# tried to eat the gar.

Scared the BeJesus out of me and the gar as well. Lost my hook and almost had to change underwear.

True story. Let me know where to send the gar.
