Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Another glass eye creation.
This is in keeping with a tendency towards sparseness. Most critters in the water upon which fish might feed don't have a zillion legs flapping around, or a body as big as Kirstie Allie. They are kinda trim, really, and that is what I'm reaching for here.

But I love those BIG eyes. I believe they are a strike trigger for fish. They also weight the fly in such a way that the hook point rides up... making the fly snag resistant. If nothing else, they add a cartoon-like character I enjoy.

And while most fly tiers might wrap on a hackle collar 'ol Shakespeare would approve of, I went here with a beard (aka "throat") of mallard flank fibers. I see them as simulating legs, or some other appendage.

Lastly, the head and eyes are filled in with hair dubbing - hair from our mangy dog, who got a haircut last night!

It's true... The possibilities are endless.
Thanks for looking.

This may be well along the way to becoming my signature fly.
This due mostly to the fact that I have a massive supply of glass beads.
It so also easy to tie, relatively durable, and follows known fish catching concepts.
But I mostly just like the look of it; really, it's along the lines of the "Briminator."
And that is proven producer.

LOL

I kind of figured it was rope-dubbed, from the look of it.

PS The body is wrapped marabou "rope" ;-)

Heck, Fuzzy, I've already got a mess of flies to finish for him!

Dang.  I may have to try to tie a few of those up....

Scruff, do some in Pink, and see if Jeff wants any!

Thanks Mark and Jen.
Jen: The eyes are hand made at the bench. I use the same technique as making mono eyes, but I out the bead on before melting the plastic. And I this case, I'm using bristles from a cheap broom.
