Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This shows how recently various sunfish species have separated evolutionarily. It is a good indicator in regards to potential hybridization.

I too was paying attention to the Flier/Crappie connection Tony......It is interesting for sure....Helps to explain why Fliers and Crappie look alike.....especially when the Crappie are smaller in size.....

Very curious....some of it appears pretty obvious, such as  the relationship between Pumpkinseeds and Redear Sunfish, which appear to have evolved from a common ancestor around 7.5 million years ago, while other aspects raise interesting possibilities..... a flier/black crappie hybrid? Or a Rockbass/Crappie hybrid like Walt stated?

Interesting stuff but well beyond my learning curve.

It's interesting that bluegill are more closely related to warmouth than to redear - never would have guessed.  Or that rock bass are closely related to crappie.  Fascinating stuff!

Mike, I agree with you, love to learn but that is way too much information for an old Marine like me...... Semper Fi. I think it is good information for the Pond boys that breed. 19 degrees in Indy today and I bet Tony is chopping through the ice on his ponds checking up on his babies......I should make a visit to Tony's place to get a better understanding as to what it takes to be a sucussfull breeder like he is. , before I make the move up North.
