I couldn't say the age of the fish, Tony.  I began working with this particular pond in the summer of 2009; at that time there were no bass left in the pond, and the bluegill were badly overpopulated and averaged 3".  Since I doubt one of those fish that were already in the pond that first year would have made it to this size, I would say it's probably a max of five years old, but it could be younger.  But that's just a wild guess.

Walt, do you have an approx. age for this fish?

Note that the tail isn't pinched so it would have measured 11.5".

Funny you should mention weight, Tony.  I only fished today because on Friday when I was treating this pond for some duckweed that just got brought into it recently by ducks, I saw a fish that, if it was a bluegill, I wouldn't even tell you how big it looked because no one would believe it; I just got a quick look at the fish as it rolled to get away from my nearby johnboat.  So today I went to the pond by myself, and took a fruit/vegetable scale, along with a plastic storage bin I thought would be big enough to lay my tournament ruler in so I that if I caught the giant I could have it in water while I measured it, but ithe bin was about an inch too short.

And, I didn't catch the fish I saw on Friday, of course.  When I caught this one I was going to weigh it, but then it got to flopping all over the boat and I wanted to get it back into the water so I didn't get the weight.  I would guess between 1.5 and 2 pounds.  It was easily the biggest pure-strain bluegill I personally have caught (a couple guide clients have caught some big ones in the past year but this was my biggest to date).
