Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hook, body, legs and hair... That's it.
The hook is bent a special way to help it float point up, making it snag resistant.

Fox and squirrel huh ,used them both myself on jigs with success. Bucktail is great too though .  .

Some have a hair wing, yes.*
Others won't have it added, by choice. I want to see how they perform with, and without, the hair. The SBS I'm following on these uses it, however. So you see some here.

*I'm using fox and squirrel here. This is because that is what my "Highway Supply Shop" had available last season. I've been hoping some raccoon would come available, but so far, nuttin'.

These look awesome David! Is that a bit of bucktail on these guys?

To be honest, Rex, I've yet to try it.
But it has all the attributes of a killing bluegill fly. I like that it can be adapted to different materials, colors, sizes, etc.
Fish nipping the legs was my initial concern. I've seen it many times, too, on surface spiders. I had hoped that these, being sinkers might encourage a more aggressive bite. So thanks for the tip on trimming the rear legs if needed.

These will do the job for sure.  If you get hits but don't hook up, trim the lenght of your rear legs some.   I've had the experience of seeing fish in super clear water nip the legs.  A slight trim and they targeted the butt of the fly giving me a hooked fish.  Your right about it being a simple pattern but as I'm sure you know, it's deadly

Thanks Lucky.
I wanna figure out some kinda way to do the hair stacking, so I can even up the tips better.

Jen,
The bodies are chenille for the most part. The brown one has a head made of Antron dubbing, and you could use any kind of dubbing - or almost anything else.
These are simple and take no exotic materials.

Looks like you got the spiders down McScruff and sinking on top of that.

Comment by Jen Nayfly on July 30, 2014 at 1:32pm
