Do you love big bluegill?
This is what I call a bluegill beast hook. Note this line is also a little heavy for my liking. This is the heaviest hook I fish when the gills are slam'n. This is 2 sizes larger than my Spring hook selection. Next to that hook would be common bluegill food - a bloodworm (midgefly larvae).
If you can image in it, I fished bloodworm in a World Championships on a size 22 hook. Single bloodworm, tiny hook. Fish something that fits in their mouth and they will eat it.

LOL!! GO JOHNNY!! Definitely will love to see the results. Nothing like the real thing to compare to the artificials.
o.k. you guys have typed bloodworm one too many times. This Spring it's on. I am going to harvest some bloodworm and I will fish the chironomid for the Leo-pomis in my my region (and those on this board).
I do have proper live bloodworm hooks and WAY TOO MANY rigs to fish these buggers - pun intended.
Cane Pole Crazy will get a nice little bit of posting when I undertake this. I think I have the perfect bloodworm farm on the way to the perfect fishing spot for a bloodworm pyscho-micro fishing session.
I believe this is nano angling and I have poked fun at major articles where they use "ultra-light" and 4 lb. test in the same sentence. For the nano- we will be rocking the .75 lb. leader to fish our bloodworm offering.
We can compare notes once you get these tied. I might have to ask for one to be sent my way so I can do a side-by-side photo shoot with the real chironomid next to the tied version...
Spring fun is on.
Allen, that's why I'm so interested to see someone tying the bloodworm in that size. Man, I broke so many of the #20 to #24 hooks before I could even blink. Thank goodness I'm not a doctor right now, or I would have killed quite a few people on the operating room.
Leo, I've got 3xl curved-shank hooks down to size 16. I've got other hooks down to size 26, but those are mostly dry-fly hooks.
Tying a chironomid that small would be interesting. The size 16 wouldn't be a problem. Much smaller, and I would worry about that apply the vinyl body material would bend or break the hook. I would probably go with that Cajun Red Line in a 8 lbs test size, maybe that would work.
I've got some of that stretchy bead cord you can get at Wally World. I wonder, if I cut a length, and stretch it, if it would hold the new thinner diameter???? I may have do to some experiementing tonight and report back......
On another note, I had an idea a couple days ago. We have so many good tyers on this site, and we all trade ideas. Maybe we should start a group here on BBG, and call ourselves, "The Fly Tyers Skunkworks" ??
Hook remover available at LiveBaitFishingTackle.com- only.
(Might way until Saturday- book mark it), there are two other really cool tools sold next-to-no where on the mainland that will also be in stock there. #2. Split Shot Cutter. When you see it, you will wonder how you have lived your life making rigs without out. It has taken me 2 years to get this puppy in stock there.
#3 Cool Tool from Nowhere - Bait Launchers... if you want to really get the fish going, trout, crappie, gills, carp & cats, I loose-feed grubs with one of these over my float.
This is the first of 3 waves of cool stuff being stocked at that store. If you have a store by you and want them to stock this stuff- email me - or point them here.
David, this is the site that Johnny pointed to:

Allen, definitely go smaller..I mean a heck lot smaller. If Johnny uses #22, you might consider #22 3x long or #24 3x long? I would be interested to see your methodology in tying the sucker. SMALLLLlllllllll stuff..
Ok, if I were to go into production tying Chironomids, what would be the ideal size / type of hook? I've done some, usually on size 12 scud hooks. I did one on a size 12 3xl curved shank hook, and it caught fish.
